HOUSE INFERNAL
Author: Edward Lee
Hardcore horror author Lee's newest book takes place in the same universe as CITY INFERNAL and INFERNAL ANGEL (and MESSENGER and MONSTER as well), which automatically puts it on my 'must read' list.
Here, an old priory house of the Catholic Church is being renovated and it turns out that its architect was a closet Satan worshipper. A hot blonde named Venetia Barlow, who soon intends to become a nun, volunteers to help renovate the house. Also there is a priest, a priest-in-training and the grounds support staff. Things start to get weird for her when she starts hearing a man's voice talk to her - a voice that is coming straight from Hell.
A deceased priest, on a mission in Hell, recruits a newly arrived soul by the name of Ruth to help him. He acts as the tour guide, as all the horrible sights and sounds are new to her. First, they go to a city made of rot, then another made of feces (Ruth notes in one scene that the sidewalks have corn in them!). He communicates every so often to Venetia but doesn't tell what his exact plan is to Ruth. He does promise her, though, that if she helps him and they are successful, her stay in hell will be changed to a stay in purgatory, which would be far better. As for himself, he'll be able to end his stay in purgatory and go straight to heaven.
What is always so fascinating about the Ed Lee 'hell' books is how detailed, nightmarish and entertaining they are. Highly recommended.
