By Robert J. Sawyer. This last installment of The Neanderthal Parallax series (HOMINIDS, HUMANS, HYBRIDS) deals with Mary, a human, and Ponter, the Neanderthal scientist from a parallel Earth, who have fallen in love and desire to have a child. Since they are of two different species, though, they must utilize a newly invented-and outlawed-neanderthal device that can change and reproduce RNA and DNA. This device gets in the hands of the U.S. military assigned to guarding 'the portal' between the worlds. An officer gets overzealous by having a virus, fatal only to Neanderthals, created so that he can contaminate their pristine world and make it vacant for his earth's humans to populate. As with the previous two books there is plenty of commentary on how we humans have ransacked our world & environment-and how our religious beliefs have been responsible for a great many (well, probably all) of our violent conflicts. And I must say that author Sawyer has really hit the nail on the head on all these subjects. If you want to read something that is not only entertaining, unique and powerful, making you question your 'humanity', then I strongly suggest you read The Neanderthal Parallax series.
