AKA: John Carter Warlord Of Mars Volume 2: Man-Made Monster
This continues the story from the end of Volume 1, with John Carter and his Princess deciding to take a break from the city of Helium and explore some of the lesser known parts of Mars. They encounter the green, four-armed Warhoons, who want revenge upon him, then come to a city that's being terrorized by some sort of creature, which turns out to be one of the Synthetic Men of Mars created by mad scientist Ras Thavas. Basically, the creature kidnaps women-including Dejah Thoris-because he wants a mate. There's also story about Tars Tarkas, told by his daughter to a group of young Tharks. John Carter and his wife continue their travels and come across some of the lost technology of the Orovars, ancient Martians who used to sail the seas when Mars was covered in water, thousands of years ago. Now, one of them has awakened from suspended animation and wants to take over the planet. There's also a battle underground with a horde of plant men, with what may be part of the "Tree of Life".
However, the ending simply didn't work for me and it made the entire book an "imaginary" story, which would have been much much cooler if it was actually a part of the "official" John Carter tales. I may pick up Volume 3 when it comes out but I'm not too excited about it...
