Princess Dejah Thoris is kidnapped (again!), this time by someone from John Carter's past, when he fought in the Civil War. It's a man by the name of Joshua Clark. He had a duel with him and won-and rather than kill him let him live. Bent on getting revenge on the man who defeated him, Clark searched across the West, where was abducted by an alien species called the Kahori, large reptilian beings that are extremely warlike. We learn Clark had the help of a Martian, Vush Tanzar, who has had a crush on the Princess and secretly wants her for his own. Dejah refuses to cooperate for either of them. Meanwhile, Carter fights with some of these grey aliens in the desert wasteland and even befriends a white ape, who becomes sort of a companion/pet with Woola, his dog-like pet. Eventually Carter is captured and there's a rematch duel between him and Clark. If Clark wins he's the new Warlord of Mars. If John wins, the Kahori will leave Mars and promise to leave Earth alone as well. Of course, Carter wins and the Kahori honor their word and depart.
This is a good continuation of the original Edgar Rice Burroughs stories and the artwork reminds me of the Marvel version of WARLORD OF MARS. Highly recommended.
