If you read Edgar Rice Burrough's Pellucidar series and want something very similar, you'll enjoy this book, which is the first of a five book series. It basically takes all the plot points and situations of AT THE EARTH'S CORE- a younger man, Eric Carstairs, and older scientist, Professor Potter, discovering a lost land miles beneath the surface, encountering prehistoric creatures, Neanderthals who are like the Sagoths and modern blonde-haired Cro-Magnons, one of which he falls in love with, a princess named-Darya. This prehistoric land is called Zanthadon, a 500 square mile cavern located miles beneath a volcano in Africa (it's how they get there-via crashed helicopter). Carstairs and Potter get separated and have their own adventures. Carstairs is captured by warlike Neanderthals and becomes unlikely friends with one of them.
I didn't find this nearly as good as the Pellucidar series-or Carter's own CALLISTO or GREEN STAR books, but it is a taste of some good old fashioned adventure. Recommended.
