In the first issue, a blonde teenager named Kamandi ventures to the surface of the Earth after his grandfather dies. He's been living in a protected bunker. He finds a world ravaged by a natural disaster. Most of New York is under water, the humans he encounters are like animals and the most intelligent creatures are now animals. He first encounters a humanoid wolf, then a scavenging rat tribe, hostile gorillas and intelligent tigers. Along the way he's helped by those who understand he's an intelligent creature, such as Tuftan, prince of the tigers. My favorite issue is #7, which basically retells the "KIng Kong" story in an effective way. Kamandi also encounters Ben Boxer and his companions. They look to be normal humans but are mutations, able to transform their skin into metal armor. Kamandi decides to travel with them back to their city, which turns out to be a big, hovering globe. It's there they encounter a large headed mutant who has control over the robot servants-and it's up to Kamandi to save his friends from an attack by vicious bat-men. And issue 12 does something fairly different when introducing the giant insect Kamandi befriends.
This is a fun series, undeniably influenced by the PLANET OF THE APES movies. You can also see how this influenced the Saturday Morning cartoon, THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN. Highly recommended.
