Kong: Gods Of Skull Island (2017)
Fiction Review by The Gravedigger
03.22.21

Kong: Gods Of Skull Island (2017) A pilot, Copeland, flies his plane over Skull Island. Three months later he returns with a crew in two ships, believing they are the first white men to set foot on this hidden island. On board is a woman named Mary Talbott, who he's interested in. Copeland says he's an explorer and wants to bring civilization to the natives and informs the others they are to be pitied. When they first arrive they see an early type of bird and a large group of natives on the beach. But when they get there it seems as if they are thorny statues, meant to warn them off. Not all are statues-the natives disguised themselves to make their numbers seem larger. The shaman warns them to leave or they'll be killed by Kong.

One of the crewmen notices that some of the natives are wearing gold jewelry and gets a few others to go along with what he's thinking-that they'll all get rich. We learn a legend about Kong, how a magician from a nearby island created all the monsters to try to destroy the giant ape-but Kong won. Mary grows attached to a young native boy, Kupak, who has a facial deformity-and when she tells Copeland she wants to leave the island and take the boy with her he doesn't react well. In fact, Copeland becomes such a nuisance to the natives that they banish the crew over the massive wall, where the vicious animals dwell. And Copeland, who has never believed the natives' stories about Kong, finally gets to meet the legend in person.

This is an interesting one-shot comic, introducing some strange new animals, like "the harpies" that eat Kong's leftovers, and tells of previous visits by outsiders, such as Spanish Conquistadors. Highly recommended.
