The expedition continues and the crew encounters gigantic insects as well as monstrous frogs. Captain Lewis, who is keeping track of their discoveries in two separate logs-the real one and a "cleaned-up" version that leaves out all the fantastic creatures-is at odds with Mrs. Boniface, who figures out what he's up to. She's a survivor from the plant overrun fort in Volume 1. This time the expedition comes to a halt when their ship lodges on an arch that's in the water. They try to unhitch it but the men are attacked by a hideous, many-tongued frog, which wants to eat them. This is its territory. There's also dissension among the crew, half of who were conscripted criminals. One of them even rapes a woman and Lewis and Clark have to find a suitable punishment for him. Also. the expeditions biggest ally is the Native American woman Sacagawea, who seems to be fearless.
