Author: Jack Ketchum
It's hard to believe this book, one of the most intense horror novels I've ever read, is nearly twenty-seven years old. It holds up well. The story takes place in a quiet beach town in Maine, during the off season, where a cannibalistic, feral human family preys on unlucky people. It pits five, civilized individuals and the town's sheriff against these hunters - and they'll do almost anything to survive being eaten.
OFF SEASON makes THE HILLS HAVE EYES and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE seem like a Disney movie. With flicks like SAW, HOSTEL and WOLF CREEK this may be the ripe - and bloody - time for some Studio to make this into one intense movie experience.
