Robert "Ike" Eisenbraun is a scientist who has created an artificial intelligence called GOLEM. Its job is to save humanity--and it will help operate equipment on the moon that will mine helium-3, a vital element to the production of fusion energy. But it turns out that this helium is too unstable, so they set up an expedition to the only other place it can be mined--on Europa, a moon of Jupiter. A test run of the expedition--which involves suspended animation--takes place in Antarctica, which most closely simulates the environment on Europa. Something goes wrong (the moon has exploded) and when Ike wakes up it's a very different world. He's in the wreckage of the Antarctic base and when he escapes to the world outside he encounters creatures that have evolved in the 12 (or 120) million years he's been asleep.
He is rescued by an intelligent race of beings descended from octopus and various clones of the female members of his former crew. The clones are capturing the humanoid octopi for some reason--and Ike eventually learns it's all because of the intelligence that his supercomputer has transformed into.
THE OMEGA PROJECT is along the lines of PANDORUM crossed with THE FUTURE IS WILD. It gets a bit preachy at times and with some of the Budhism aspects it's not quite accurate--there's all this believing in a "Creator" but Budhism doesn't believe in a god Otherwise, it's a very cool future novel.
