It's 2024 and a reporter is doing a story on the beginnings of the war with the giant creatures emerging from the pacific rim. So there are plenty of flashbacks, from varying points of view, of the first battles, such as when the Golden Gate Bridge was destroyed. Conventional weapons don't work very well so they nuke it on "K-Day". Then, we learn how the Jaeger Project began and how they figured out they needed two pilots to operate the massive robots. This is an interesting book, providing background to the movie, but it is somewhat unnecessary as it's pretty much exactly what you think it would be.
