This first book is a prequel to the very first episode of the television series, filling in some much needed information as to what was going. I always felt that the first season dropped me in the middle of a series, and that so much information was left unsaid. We learn that Vanessa Ives and Sir Malcolm didn't always get along, as he blames her for the abduction of his daughter, Mina, by vampires. They are also joined by an ally, Jonathan Harker, who Malcolm never approved of. His cowboy friend, Quincy, is also on hand to help-and he's a foreshadowing of another character they'll all meet and befriend, Ethan Chandler (the cowboy/werewolf).
I enjoyed this better than most of the episodes of the tv series, so if you liked that show this is a must to read. Best of all, the illustrations of the characters look like the actors who portrayed them. Highly recommended.
