Geologist Paul Reece is heir to a wealthy mining company but doesn't want anything to do with it or his aging grandfather, who runs it. However, when an incredible discovery is made in the African Congo, he sucks it up and agrees to work--and uncover the mystery.
You see, the mining company has detected an ancient man-made structure twenty-thousand feet beneath the Earth's surface, a structure composed of complex materials.
Much of the book centers around Paul's life and that of the local inhabitants, particularly the pygmies, who know a lot more than what they are telling everyone. In fact, the buried structure may hold the entire fate of humanity. However, when that revelation comes it's sort of out of the blue and happens way too fast.
This is a well-written, fast-paced book that will keep you hooked until the ending, at which time you'll stop and say to yourself, "Gee, this isn't really about anything and is really quite stupid".
