This takes place 1,200 years before astronaut Taylor crash landed, about 670 years after our present time. Man and intelligent ape are living together in a primitive industrial society. But they aren't quite equal. In the City State of Mak humans live in a ghetto called "skin town". When the Lawgiver (seen at the beginning and end of BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES) is assassinated by what's believed to be a human, they search that part of town. Word gets to Mayor Sullivan, who is the unofficial mayor of the humans, and she's distraught since she had been adopted and raised by the old orangutan. So had female chimp Alaya, who was raised with Sully as a sister. In the present they are at odds with one another, something this slaying only makes worse. When Alaya has an autopsy done of her "Grandfather" they discover he was killed by a new, recently manufactured gun. But who is responsible? And why.
I found this all very interesting, especially with it mentioned that humans being born are mute, unable to speak. This comic makes a significant contribution to the mythos of the original 5 movie series from the 70's. This new series is a "must have" for any Apes enthusiast.
