I don't know why I've never read this before, but after reading the first three volumes of Ennis' THE BOYS I knew this had to be next on my list. While it doesn't start off as "in your face" offensive as that newer title, it nevertheless presents a lot of ideas and situations that will give most bible belt thumpers seizures or outright heart-attacks (which isn't necessarily a bad thing...)
God has taken a hike from heaven, leaving the angels in charge. but the angels have started fighting amongst themselves. Then there is the matter of a creature named Genesis, a hybrid of an angel and a demon, that has escaped. This creature is something new and may be more powerful than God himself. After it escapes from its heavenly prison to Earth, it takes refuge in the body of reluctant Reverend Jesse Custer.
However, he's in the middle of a sermon and the merging of man and superpower explodes the church into flames, leaving him the only survivor.
On his road to discovering what he's supposed to do with his new power, he ends up reuniting with his old flame, Tulip, who is still pissed that he mysteriously disappeared five years before. And she's with Cassidy, a drifter who is also a vampire. They also encounter some enemies, such as sheriff Hugo Root and a demented serial killer who cuts off people's faces.
This first book definitely gets your attention.
