It's two thousand years in the future, the 41st Century, and the nation of Japan has relocated to the moon while Earth has reverted back to the Middle Ages (as seen in ETERNAL WARRIOR Volume 2). In fact, there are many other "recreated cities" there as well. Rai is the protector of Japan and answers to a computer entity, "Father", that keeps everything in order. He's not entirely human--and we learn that every hundred years or so there's a new Rai. But why? For the first time in over a thousand years there has been a murder--and society is in turmoil. Yet we learn that Rai has killed many rebels during his life--not considered murder but following orders. So this isn't quite an ideal society, probably why there is a rebel faction. Spy-locke, a fictional folk hero, appears as a potential enemy and Augustus Silk, the oldest human alive, makes Rai question his belief system.
I thought this first Volume a great update of the 90's Valiant comic character. He exists in a much more dire future (not so in the original version, where he was sort of a Japanese counterpart to Magnus: Robot Fighter), very much influenced by THE MATRIX movies. Recommended.
