Author: Arthur Byron CoverThis is the first novel based on the comic written by J. Michael Straczynski (yeah, yeah, the creator of BABYLON FIVE).The premise is that twenty-years ago a comet struck Earth, just outside the town of Pederson Illinois, and somehow affected the 113 children that were in utero at the time. As these 'Specials' grew they exhibited super-powers . The government, afraid of what they could possibly do as adults, quarantined them and kept them under close observation. But now someone is starting to kill the lesser-powered Specials and our protagonist, 'The Poet', must find out why. We're introduced to a wide assortment of characters, from a woman who can manipulate her beauty on anyone, to supersonic flyers to a man who can speak with the dead.Think of the television show SMALLVILLE crossed with George R.R. Martin's WILD CARD book series and you get the idea.I've never read the comics but the book is a quick, entertaining read, particularly if you're a fan of Superhero type adventures. Here they are presented but with a dose of reality.
