Years ago, in New Orleans, Josiah leaves his pregnant girlfriend, Helena, to go on a mission. He's the Shadowman and he's off to stop the vengeful dead from coming through a portal. This is when we're introduced to Darque, a sinister looking guy who has opened the rift. The two mortally wound each other--and are sucked into the void. Years later, Jack Boniface discovers who his birth father was--and the police have him recorded as a criminal--and his mother was a lawbreaker, too. In a flashback, when he was a small child, we see that his mother gave him a mysterious pendant before she disappeared. Once he finds out the "truth" about them he discards the pendant. This is when the creatures attack him. The amulet had hid him from his legacy, that he is from a long line of Shadowmen. He agrees to the power and is able to protect himself and defeat them. There is a villain, a monster who has appeared, named Mr. Twist, and he's this huge, obscene looking creature created from a lot of corpses. Jack does some investigating and meets two people know exactly who he is--and fill him in with what he has to do.
This update of the 90's Valiant Comics character is a vast improvement over the original. Highly recommended.
