This is a subtle and intriguing take on vampires, more of a 'coming of age' story than anything else. Ariella Montero is a twelve-year-old girl who lives a sheltered life with her father in Saratoga Springs, New York. He keeps her at home and home schools her - and is always very reluctant to talk about her mother Sara, who left shortly after she was born.
But when strange things start to happen close to home - the slaying of a pet cat, the murder of her best friend - she awakens to the fact that her father is a vampire and that he may somehow be responsible for these things.
Ariella is also changing, becoming a teenager, and she's starting to get 'urges'. Is she also a vampire? In trying to discover herself she hitch-hikes across country in search of her long vanished mother, who may hold the answers. Just why her mother left her is also answered.
Although there are some of the vampire 'stereotypes' (such as an evil guy vampire), much of the mythos is put in a new light. There are different factions of vampires, some who view people as cattle while others don't feed on humans at all and are, in fact, environmentalists. After all, if they're immortal they definitely want to make sure there's going to be a livable planet a hundred or a thousand years from now. Ariella, as well as her mother, are also endearing characters and by the time the book ended I wanted the story to continue.
Even if you're not a fan of vampire books THE SOCIETY OF S satisfies on many different levels.
