Takes places in what would be the third or fourth season of the show. The Moon enters an area of space controlled by a definitely non-human race, which resemble large predatory bears. A huge solar powered ship crashlands on the surface of the moon and the Commander Koenig and the rest of Moonbase Alpha are surprised--and a bit leery--that it's piloted by Psychons. These are Maya's people. In fact, one of them is her older brother and another is a man she was betrothed to as a child. Of course, Maya's human boyfriend and second-in-command of Alpha, Tony Verdeschi, doesn't like this one bit. He and Maya have been trying to have a child but the difference in biology between their two species is making it problematic. However, being reunited with a group of her own people now makes pregnancy possible. These survivors from Psychon say their intentions are good and Koenig even suggests that they stay on the moon and search for a new home together. Yet they have their own agenda, which involves taking Maya with them. The bases' computer is also acting up and its cause is very surprising and hearkens the return of a character from the first season.
I enjoyed this as much as I have all the other Powys SPACE 1999 books. It further develops the characters and explains some things, such as why the Psychons are always so evil. And there's a huge change for the shape-changer Maya, which I'm sure will have repercussions in the following novels. I also liked that they change their base of operations back to the old, above ground one from the first season, rather than the cramped underground one. Plus, there are new Eagles!
SPACE 1999 fans cannot pass this book up.
