Space Family Robinson: Volume 1 (2011)
Fiction Review by The Gravedigger
05.17.13

Space Family Robinson: Volume 1 (2011) This reprints the first seven issues of the Space Family Robinson of the original Gold Key comic book series. The Robinsons--scientists Craig and June and their children, Tim and Tam, run Space Station One. They are the "first family in space". In the first episode their ship is bombarded by meteors--and they end up stopping a blue-skinned alien mad scientist who is keeping the people on his planet prisoner via weather control. Then, on an asteroid, they help rescue scientists being attacked by Flash Gordon influenced mud men. It's not until the second issue that they get lost in space, when an explosion catapults them into a different part of the galaxy. Tim and Tam take the shuttle and land on an earthlike planet where they are captured by Lizard Women. They are taken to Dr Argo, an alien who wants to dissect them! They escape with the help of a fellow prisoner, a small hand-sized alien with a big head, and they return him to his planet. Although they are lost, they are still in communication with Earth. In issue #3 Tim and Tam are again taken prisoner, again by an evil alien who has created ice-men to do his bidding. They turn the tables on him. Then, they come across a prehistoric planet, with dinosaurs and cavemen, and then another planet filled with illusions, where they befriend a giant alien and help rescue him.

Space Family Robinson is a blast from the bast. The stories are somewhat simplistic, which reflect the time period (1962), but the aliens are weird and the Spiegle artwork very cool. Personally, I like these stories better than the similarly themed television series, Lost in Space.

Writer: Del Connell
