The majority of this book takes place after the events of STAR TREK BEYOND. While a new Enterprise is being constructed the crew is assigned to different ships. Kirk and Dr. McCoy are aboard the Endeavor, and are dealing with a new crew. Spock and Uhura are on New Vulcan after Spock decided to take a sabbatical from Starfleet. At first he was trepidatious about having her join him there but he's pleased that she's there. Sulu is appointed First Office aboard the USS Concord and it's a position he has to get used to.The captain here is Captain Terrell (a younger version from the original STAR TREK II: WRATH OF KHAN). The enemy here is a Borg Sphere,which first attacks the Concord and assimilates Terrell. Kirk goes in to help out and Spock is partially assimilated as well. It's an interesting tale, again speeding up events from all the original series. Another tale gives us the story of Jaylah, from STAR TREK BEYOND--how she ended up on that planet and where she came from. Although her story is sandwiched between two a about Kirk, it does connect this with the events from the recent film.
