This continues the story begun in GODS ABOVE, with Captain Riker and his crew taken captive by a mysterious, reclusive race known as the Celiar. Meanwhile, Captain Ezri Dax and Jean Luc Picard are trying to figure out a way to collapse the two dozen wormholes they've discovered so that the invading fleet of the Borg can't use them. They come across some strange discoveries and also encounter the hunter-based Hirogen in the Delta Quadrant. But they are too late preventing the Borg from arriving. A message from Captain Chakotay and a half destroyed VOYAGER tells them that thousands of Borg ships have invaded Federation space.
As with the first book, this is all fairly dark and makes some drastic changes to the Star Trek: TNG universe. I guess the publisher figures that since there'll be no more movies with these characters anything can now be done with them. I'm just not sure I like some of these directions, particularly with both Beverly Crusher and Deanna Troi pregnant.
