This first book the LEGACIES trilogy, in honor of Trek's 50th Anniversary, is primarily about Captain Pike's "Number One", the character Majel Barrett portrayed in the very first Star Trek Pilot. In a flashback tale in which she was a new officer serving under the Enterprise's first captain, Robert April, she and an away team investigate a primitive planet that's being invaded by slug-like creatures from another Universe. She and her team eventually solve the primary problem but at the price of many of the officers being transported to another universe. Now, over 17 years later, "Una", now a Captain of her own ship, wants to rescue them. Only in order to do so she must steal a valued, secret object hidden on the Enterprise, a device only a few people know about, including Captain Kirk. Stuck between helping an old friend or obeying the law, Kirk opts to help her out and get her to that planet. It's now in dispute with the Klingon Empire, who claims it as one of their worlds. Thrown into all of this is a spy aboard Kirk's ship who is working for the Romulans.
This first book definitely captures the feel of the series and it's cool the main character is a very underutilized one in the Star Trek universe. Recommended. Looking forward to the next two books, which continues the story...
