Chronologically, this takes place a few months before the events of STAR TREK: INSURRECTION. It's the tale of how the Jem'Hadar, these reptilian warrior slaves of The Dominion, along with the Cardassians, have captured the planet Betazed, the home planet of Deanna Troi. In a space station orbiting the planet, a mad Cardassian scientist is performing brain surgery experiments on the Betazoids, trying to transplant the part of their brain responsible for their psychic powers into the Jem'Hadar. The Enterprise is deployed to help the planet-and the mission is to free an infamous Betazed prisoner who has the knowledge and ability to kill people with his mind. The Betazed resistance, hopelessly outnumbered, think this is the only way to defeat their conquerors, by killing them with their minds. And in charge of the mission is Deanna Troi, who once worked at the prison where this prisoner was kept. As Star Trek books go this is a pretty good one.
