The crew of the Starship Titan, captained by Riker, encounters a species that are artificially intelligent robots. Of course, after the near extermination by the Borg, everyone is leery dealing with them. What they end up doing is making Titan's computer self-aware and a true artificial intelligence. It takes the form of Minuet, a character Riker used to use on the Holodecks when he was on Enterprise. These robot aliens were created to battle an enemy called "The Null", which is sort of a cancer from another dimension. That's all the majority of the intelligent robots are concerned about, defeating this age-old enemy. Riker and the crew of the Enterprise work out an agreement to fight them together, but there's a price, which involves the now intelligent "soul" of the ship to sacrifice itself.
This most recent TITAN book has all the usual Star Trek themes, though it echoes the storyline with the computer Morgan in the NEW FRONTIER series a bit too much. However, it does bring up some new issues and allows for a new, unique crew member, which I'm sure will be explored in future novels.
