This is the third in the Khan Noonien books by Greg Cox, which is about his exile on Ceti Alpha V. It clears up all those puzzling questions presented in THE WRATH OF KHAN, such as why Khan is much older than all his other augments and why he has such an intense hatred of Kirk.A year after the events in that movie, Captain Kirk goes to Ceti Alpha V for answers-and discovers that there are some genetically engineered humans that still remain on the planet. Through diaries kept by Khan's wife, Marla McIvers, Kirk pieces together the past fifteen years Khan spent on the planet. In the original series, Kirk and crew had left Khan on this planet in order to start a new life-and to keep them out of trouble. The planet was wild and lush-but after six months a nearby planet exploded and it radically transformed the landscape to that of a harsh desert world. From the beginning Khan and his followers have disagreements, as not everyone wishes to follow his leadership. Eventually, they break into two groups, at war with each other for resources. When Marla is killed by one of the deadly 'Ceti Eels', this tips Khan over the edge. For every bad thing that happens to him he focuses his hate on the man responsible for sending him to this planet-James T. Kirk. And as the years go by and more hardships happen, his hatred only increases. At the end of his exile, before he takes control of the Enterprise in WRATH OF KHAN, nearly all the original genetically engineered humans have died-and only their rapidly grown offspring survive. This is a good ending to the trilogy, presenting events in a satisfying way and leaving no questions unanswered.
