This DC comics Elseworlds story has Victor Luthor creating a Frankenstein monster from the remnants of Kal-el's ship. In this reality it's the late 1800's and the baby never survived the trip to Earth. It's just a skeleton. Victor is in trouble with is medical school because of his unorthodox experiments involving creating life-and when the capsule crashes nearby it gives him the opportunity-and technology-to create a being, combining Kryptonian technology and human corpses. A creature is created. Then, when Victor's bride-to-be is killed he brings her back to life, which becomes the mate for the creature. The story does follow the Mary Shelley novel, though the ending has the creature evolving into the flying, more highly developed being, who comes to reclaim his creator when it's the end of his sad life. I've always dug these "alternate world" tales, much more than Marvel's "What If?" series. Recommended.
