Gus, the half boy/half deer hybrid, had been brought to a lab facility by Jeppard, who had seemed to be his protector/friend in the first volume. Here, he meets other kids like himself, though most of them have a limited intelligence. Doctor Singh is the one who is trying to find a cure for the virus that has wiped out most of mankind. He believes the cure can be found in the DNA of these mutants.
The other half of the book deals with Jeppard and explains, via flashbacks, why he is the way he is. It goes from when he and his wife were trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic land through the present day. It's also suggested that he may actually be related to Gus, which surprised me. I did not see that coming. This second volume is as good as the first and remains one of the more unique end-of-the-world scenarios.
