This is a tale of a twelve-year-old Tarzan. He's living with his ape tribe and gets the idea to play an elaborate practical joke on his tribe's leader, Kerchak. He finds a wasp nest, plugs it up, and carries it back, to have it land on the ape when he's sleeping. Although this plan takes a few days and he and his monkey companion, N'kima, get stung, it's well worth the effort. Then, Tarzan goes off to explore an area where he's never been and makes friends with a young ape, Akut, who acts a bit different than the apes of his tribe. This ape thinks about things and is inquisitive, like him. Soon, Tarzan and his new companion make way to an area where men are hunting elephants-and becomes friends with the whites who run the camp. They readily accept him as some jungle boy and Tarzan quickly learns English. Eventually, Akut joins them as well.
There's also Atara, a mysterious young woman who can speak the ape language and has incredible strength, who hearkens from either the lost city of Opar (or a sister city). Young Tarzan is enamored with her. Oh, and there's a familiar villain to, of both Tarzan and the white men he's allies with.
While this has the feel of a Tarzan book a lot of these events are very different than in JUNGLE TALES OF TARZAN and his origin, where he first met D'Arnot and was introduced to civilization. The answer? This is an alternate world, where things have gone in a slightly different direction. Still, this is an excellent Tarzan novel that features artwork by Alex Nino. Highly recommended.
