Written by Howard Chaykin & David Tischman, illustrated by David Hahn
This is a unique premise for a vampire story. In this graphic novel vampires are not a secret and are a part of the general population. It's stated that there are 300,000 of them in Miami alone. Vampirism is caused by vampire bats--and if you're a vampire you can "turn" someone who isn't. And because of Sun block sunlight isn't a problem. Neither are crosses.
The Del Toro clan, a family of vampires, run the organized crime of Miami. The father is killed and he leaves his legacy to his son Leto. However, Leto left the family business years before to become a priest, so he has to make a decision as to what's the right thing to do. There's also Risa, Leto's sister, who will go to any lengths to get what she wants-- and she wants to run the family business.
The first part of the book collects the first series (2004), which deals with the inner workings of the Del Toro family. The second part of the book is BITE CLUB: VAMPIRE CRIME UNIT (2006), and focuses on the detectives who are trying to put the Del Toros away. One of them is a self-hating vampire who is having an affair with another detective and "the new kid", Macacoy, his half Irish, half Cuban-- and then becomes a vampire after he's attacked by a flock of vampire bats. In fact, Risa, now head of the Del Toro family, is very much interested in him.
BITE CLUB is an fascinating combination of crime drama and vampiric shenanigans.
