It's April 25, 1945 in Berlin, Germany, and all the allied Superheroes have converged on the city. Among them are a group of 12 little known heroes with such names as Master Mind Excello, Rockman, Black Widow, Captain Wonder, Fiery Mask, Blue Blade, Dynamic Man, the Witness, a robot named Electro, and The Phantom Reporter, a guy who has no powers but is the one telling this whole story. These twelve come upon a Nazi lair and are frozen, only to be awakened in the present day. At first this is a fish-out-of-water story, as they are all trying to adjust. Some still have some family left, others are utterly alone. And others are unable to fit well in modern society. The government houses them and wants them to work as superheroes and they go along with this at first. The second half of the book becomes more interesting, a murder-mystery when Blue Blade is killed soon after trying to take control of the robot Electro. One of the other heroes is responsible and the reason why is very surprising...
Stracynski is one of the best writers in comics and THE TWELVE is up there with RISING STARS and POWERS in terms of creating a gripping superhero ensemble. This graphic novel is highly recommended.
