This is a collection of short stories by many different authors that takes place on Edgar Rice Burrough's Barsoom.
The best stories are the ones by Joe Lansdale, THE METAL MEN OF MARS, which has Carter against a mad scientist, and S.M. Stirling's ultimate Burrough's homage, which not only tells of a present-day John Carter and spaceships between the worlds, but takes into account The Moon Men, Tarzan and Pellucidar.
Surprising stories are THE APE MAN OF MARS by Peter S. Beagle, which has Tarzan transported to the Red Planet--and he and John Carter don't exactly get along. WOOLA'S SONG by Theodora Goss is from the entire perspective of Carter's loyal hound and shows the "animal" is much smarter than the normal canine. And THE GHOST THAT HAUNTS THE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAINS has John Carter, Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas stuck out in the Rocky Mountains of Earth, surviving and trying to get back to Barsoom.
Whether you're a long-time fan of the original series or have been recently introduced to John Carter with the new Disney movie, you'll enjoy this collection. Highly recommended.
