In the opening panel, the King of Oakhaven is wounded by the dark forces he and his men battle. He's taken to the enemy leader. We then skip ahead some time, to a woman, Zjanna, putting the finishing touches on a tattoo. She says it will blind the Necromancer and it will not protect him forever. He replies, "It doesn't have to. Just long enough for me to find him." This is the once King, Valen, and he's a zombie! He's a dead man, searching for his killer. He goes to a bar, looking for men to help him, and he's viewed as an abomination. A suspicious looking guy says he can help get him to the undead lands, but this turns out to be a trap and he's confronted by a group of men he used to command. He explains that he's no longer their control and that he wants to regain his soul but they don't believe him. There's a fight and he must reluctantly slaughter them all.
Meanwhile, the undead creatures are searching for him and they visit Zjanna, who manages to slice and dice the lot of them. They burn down her home so she confronts Valen--and, with a thief, joins him on his quest.
