What DEAD LINES did for ghosts Bear does for the bio-terrorism. Scientist Hal Cousins, and his identical twin, are searching for primitive life forms that may hold the secret of eternal life. Hal finds these far beneath the ocean surface in creatures called Vendobionts, organisms which carry primitive bacteria. And bacteria is the key to prolonging life.
His scientific expedition is interrupted when he's almost killed by the pilot of his sub and when he surfaces finds out that some of the crew also went nuts, for no apparent reason. Needless to say, this halts his research but he trudges on. But what he uncovers is that scientists have been down this road before and have not only found "the fountain of youth" but can create strains of bacteria that can control human behavior --and that this has been going on, worldwide, since the 1930's.
As with most of Bear's books the characters are interesting and the pages whiz by. A definite good read.
