Graphic novel written by Robert Kirkman
Rick Grimes was a police officer until he woke up from a coma to find the world taken over by the undead. He flees the hospital and goes in search of his wife and young son, who have managed to survive with the help of his old partner. He meets up with them - and a group of other survivors, who are travelling in a cramped RV. They stay clear of the cities, as they are death traps, with way too many of the zombies and every so often come across other survivors and difficult situations. In fact, it's getting colder outside and they have to find some type of place to live for the winter, not to mention trying to find edible food. They do come to a gated community, which may seem to be the answer, but it's full of zombies - and the fenced in farmhouse they come to next has its own share of problems. It isn't until they take over a huge abandoned prison that they may actually have a breather.
What I like about these six books (each has six or so issues of the comic) is that it realistically represents how how you think people would act in this sort of situations. The zombies are zombies but the people are the ones who are even more dangerous and unpredictable. The main character, Rick, is almost a totally different person by the end of Book #6.
THE WALKING DEAD remains the best zombie movie I have ever read. Truly.
