Sequel to THE GODS OF XUMA, taking place thirty years after the first book, where humans have assimilated, for the most part, into the Xuman society (which mirrors the martians of Edgar Rice Burrough's BARSOOM). Although many of the humans have adapted well to their new world there are some factions who regard the natives as 'lizards' and treat them as such. They also keep their women locked up, getting them to have as many as ten children whether they want to or not. They want to build up the human population as quickly as possible so they can rule. One young woman, though, escapes and tries crossing the planet to safety. On the way she befriends a young Xuman and their relationship grows. We learn a lot about how the planet has changed since the humans came. An interesting sequel because none of the characters from the first book are present and it's different enough that it's not a rehash.
