One of the good things about reviewing for Buried.com is that it's introduced me to horror authors I've never read before. And after reading P.D. Cacek's THE WIND CALLER, I have a lot of catching up to do on her previous novels.Gideon Berlander is an evil man who wields incredible power. Long ago, when he was a child, he interrupted a Native American ceremony and because of it is able to control the wind. All of the power was supposed to go to an Indian by the name of Joseph, but Joseph wasn't strong enough to contain it. So the power was divided between the two children. Now they are old men and nearing the end of their lives-and someone new has to take on the responsibility of the wind. This someone turns out to be both Gideon & Joseph's grand-daughter, Sky. But Gideon doesn't want to give up his power, even in death-and he becomes even more destructive as he wreaks vengeance on those he thought were against him (which is about everyone in the nearby town).THE WIND CALLER has interesting, unpredictable characters and a page-turning plot. What Joseph ends up doing at the end of the story totally threw me off-I wasn't expecting that, particularly from the 'Good' guy.The novel also reminded me a bit of one of Owl Goingback's novels in that it deals with an ancient power in the modern world and respects the source material. An excellent read.(check out the interview with P.D. Cacek in the interview section of Buried.com)
