What made the original X-O Manowar comic great, to me, was the mesh between a primitive, barbaric human having access to advanced technology. It's a fish-out-of water story that had some interesting complications. However, this reboot has the barbarian Aric as a much more intelligent warrior, going up against the Roman Empire. He gives these long rousing speeches before battles. When Aric and his warriors mistakingly attack some aliens who have landed, he's captured and taken to their ship. Almost immediately he fights back and learns that they worship a suit of armor. These spider-aliens, unlike those in the original series who feed on humans like vampires, are vegetarians. Aric tries to fight again but is stopped and his hand cut off to make an example. Years go by until he's able to lead a rebellion and get to that armor. He escapes to Earth--and to Rome, Italy, but over sixteen hundred years have passed. He fights some jet planes and word gets out to the alien agents on earth, who resemble humans.
Unlike the recent incarnations of SHADOWMAN and BLOODSHOT, this new X-O MANOWAR didn't cut it for me.
