For years, the crew of the Solo Ship has been at war, and on the run, from their enemies, the Buff Clan. The Solo Ship has a major weapon at their disposal: a mysterious, supernatural robot known as the Ideon. However, the Buff Clan is working on their latest weapon: the Ganda Rowa, a powerful warship that might be even more powerful than the Ideon. Meanwhile, Karala, a member of the Solo crew and a former member of the Buff Clan, discovers that she is pregnant. She believes that this child, a messiah, could put an end to the conflict between the two factions. But a side-effect is that this child makes the Ideon more powerful, and so the war tragically escalates until the only thing a war causes - doom, death and destruction - are manifested.

Movie Trivia:
- This is a spin-off of "Densetsu kyojin ideon" (1980), which was meant to be 43 episodes long but got canceled after 39 were aired. This film is composed of the last episode aired (#39) and the remaining four episodes (#40-43).
-
The series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino makes an appearance near the end of the film: he appears in a spacesuit on the Solo Ship's bridge with storyboard illustrations in his hands (fittingly, Tomino himself is killed in the film).
-
The opening sequence of the film features the Ideon chopping a planet in half with its blades. This was taken from "Densetsu kyojin ideon" (1980)'s 38th episode, "The Space Runaway."
-
SPOILER: The then-innovative ending of the film (the destruction of the Ideon, the death of the entire cast, and the end and rebirth of the universe) was unexpected and shocked everyone, and led to creator Yoshiyuki Tomino gaining his famous "Kill 'em All" reputation. The "Ideon" manga has become renowned for being "the show where everyone dies."
-
SPOILER: The last scenes of the film (everyone's naked souls head towards a new planet to be reborn) echoes both the opening and finale of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) (the opening only in terms of seeing the new planet approach).
