Movie Trivia:
- This film was lost for fifty years until being rediscovered by Kinugasa in a shed in 1971.
-
Back then most Japanese cinemas would show domestic films, and some other cinemas would show foreign films. Ever since this films is quite different from most films which were made back then, it would be shown in latter cinemas. Quite to the surprise of everybody, the film would immediately be a big success.
-
Director Teinosuke Kinugasa had so little money to make this film, that his stars - some of them rather big names - had to help paint sets, push the dolly and make props. He had only eight small lights to work with, so he painted the walls of his small studio silver to make them reflect additional illumination.
-
The film was shot over a relatively long period - one month. Since Director Teinosuke Kinugasa couldn't afford accommodations for his actors, they slept on the set or in the front office.
