After the shocking bathtub death of his mother and her lover, the sinister Patrick lays comatose in a small private hospital, his only action being his involuntary spitting. When a pretty young nurse, just separated from her husband, begins work at the hospital, she senses that Patrick is communicating with her, and he seems to be using his psychic powers to manipulate events in her life.

Movie Trivia:
- Special eye drops were used on Robert Thompson so he could hold his eyes open for up to a minute without blinking.
-
According to Richard Franklin the original cut of the film was 140 minutes long. Franklin says the footage cut for the 112 minute version no longer exists.
-
When released in America the film was edited down for time and the entire cast was re-dubbed for American audiences. This angered Robert Helpmann so much that he attempted to take legal action against the US distributors.
-
In a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor the neon 'emergency entrance' sign in the film is always malfunctioning to say 'trance', referring to Patrick's coma.
-
Only one set was built for the film - Patrick's hospital room. The rest of the film was shot entirely on location.
