Red Planet (2000) In the near future, Earth is dying. A new colony on Mars could be humanity's only hope. A team of American astronauts, each a specialist in a different field, is making the first manned expedition to the red planet and must struggle to overcome the differences in their personalities, backgrounds and ideologies for the overall good of the mission. When their equipment suffers life-threatening damage and the crew must depend on one another for survival on the hostile surface of Mars, their doubts, fears and questions about God, man's destiny and the nature of the universe become defining elements in their fates. In this alien environment they must come face to face with their most human selves.

Movie Quote(s):
  • Dr. Quinn Burchenal: Uh oh - we're going to talk about God now, aren't we? 'Cause if we are, I'm going to need another pop. Chantilas: Not God... . faith. Dr. Quinn Burchenal: Faith? Oh, I had a girlfriend named Faith. She cheated on me, with a girl named Chastity.
  • Gallagher: This is it. That moment they told us in high school where one day, algebra would save our lives. Dr. Quinn Burchenal: [Laughs] Shut up.
  • [Commander Kate Bowman steps out of the shower not realizing Gallagher coming in] Commander Kate Bowman: Could you pass me the towel, please? Gallagher: Sure. Sorry. Commander Kate Bowman: Just pretend I'm your sister. Gallagher: [grins] I have two sisters. They don't look like you.
  • Gallagher: Fuck this planet!
  • Dr. Quinn Burchenal: We just disappointed 10 billion people. Not counting the ex-wives.
Movie Trivia:
  • Unlike many other science fiction films, the behavior of fire in zero gravity is quite realistically depicted
  • The Mars 1 main computer "Lucille" is one of the first "computer" characters in the history of science fiction films to have a realistic voice that is entirely computer generated. The experimental voice synthesizer software was provided by AT&T Bell Labs.
  • The film was originally set to be titled "Alone". During preproduction the title was changed again to "Mars", then changed to avoid confusion with Mission to Mars (2000)), than finally to "Red Planet".
  • Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow needed to get the cast in place in order to take advantage of benign weather conditions or risk delaying production for several months.
  • Antony Hoffman made his feature debut with this film.
