 A killer named the Breather terrorizes students at a high school. Whenever the killer finds students having sex, he kills them. He has some intense issues with which to deal. He likes to breathe heavily, and he likes to make prank calls while talking through a rubber chicken.

- The film was funded by Paramount because of the writers strike that was going on in 1981. The studio wanted to put out as many non-union films as possible during the strike.

The marching band featured in the parade scene was the Pearland High School marching band, the actual marching band of the Pearland Texas high school that the film was shot at.

Producer and co-director Michael Ritchie had his named removed from the films credits due to difficulties during the production. On screen his credit is replaced by the usual Allen Smithee pseudonym.

Though the film was a failure upon release in theaters its subsequent airings on television helped to gain it a cult following. It was frequently shown on television due to the fact that the film featured little profanity or violence.

The name of the high school in the film is Lamab High, a reference to the real shooting location of Lamar High School in Houston Texas.
