Navy Commander Hal Roberts is assigned to lead an expedition to Little America in Antartica to investigate reports of a mysterious warm water inland lake discovered a decade earlier. His helicopter and its small party, including beautiful reporter Maggie Hathaway, is forced down into a volcanic crater by a fierce storm. They find themselves trapped in a lush tropical environment that has survived from the Mesozoic Era. Fighting carnivorous plants, dinosaurs, and a limited time window, they struggle to survive and repair the helicopter, their only means of escape. They are both helped and hindered by Dr. Carl Hunter, a megalomaniac survivor of an earlier expedition, who has learned to adapt to the hostile environment.

- Behind a barrier of antarctic ice... a paradise of hidden terrors!
- Cmdr. Harold Roberts: It is true that you can't live among beasts without becoming one. It is just as true that you can't live among human beings without becoming affected by their humanity.
Cmdr. Harold Roberts: We'll find the wreck without your help. Dr. Carl Hunter: Maybe you will if you aren't trampled to death first or eaten alive or die of starvation. Wait till the Antarctic night comes and for nine months the black air hangs round you like a rotten rag and your eyes are blinded from the dark and from your own sweat, and you lose each other - and you're alone - alone. Do you hear me? ...Always alone!
Cmdr. Harold Roberts: We're not going to dig our way out of here through human flesh. Not Maggie's, Hunter's, not even yours.
Cmdr. Harold Roberts: We're not gonna dig our way out of here through human flesh.
Capt. Burnham: Now would you care to meet some of the men you'll be working with? Margaret 'Maggie' Hathaway: I always love to meet men, Captain.
- This story was allegedly inspired by the discovery, in 1947, of an area of inexplicably warm water in Antarctica.
