The Gravedigger's Flint Horror Convention 2011 Wrap-Up

Flint, Michigan's very first horror convention was held downtown on October 29th, 2011.

While it was small, akin to the very first show of the now successful Cinema Wasteland convention (near Cleveland, OH), it brought in a large number of horror fans.

Featured guests included Ken Sagoes, of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 (who is a lot shorter than I would have thought!), Evil Dead Effects artist and all around nice guy Tom Sullivan, Detroit area personality Wolfman Mac, actor/writer David Hayes, who kept on pushing "The Anal birthing scene by a transvestite" that's in the DVD, BACKWOODS, and Josh Becker, who I actually avoided because I didn't want to hear any bitter Sam Raimi stories. As far as vendors, there were quite a few artists, from illustrators to weird and unique "monster dolls". One of the coolest vendors, I thought, was Emi Slade, who had these unique Clthulhu-inspired monster sculptures. Of course, lots of DVDS from companies such as Synapse as well as a handful of independent Michigan based filmmakers like Silver Bullet Pictures, LLC, whose movie Heavy Mental was picked up by Troma. There were also showings of micro-budget films such as THE ITALIAN ZOMBIE MOVIE, HALLOWED END and UNDER THE SCARES throughout the day. Panels included "Evil Dead Memories and Making Indie Horror in Michigan", "Horror in Music" and "Making Independent Horror Films". And, it being the season, there was a costume contest that was divided between children, best costume and best original costume. The zombies were great and there was even Count Chocula, who won first place. Thank god there weren't any Klingons (I'm prejudiced every since a CHILLER convention twenty-years ago).

The Flint Horror Convention is a great example of a horror convention done right. It was put on by friends Chris Ringler and Geary Roe, who are life-long horror fans. I definitely look forward to next year's convention.
