The Carolina Rollergirls had their second official bout this past Sunday (5/23/05) at the Skate Ranch in Raleigh where members of the Buried.com staff were in attendance. After the excitement of Bout 1, we were surely looking forward to seeing what was in store for us with Bout 2 in the inaugural season. Once again, the ladies of Brawleigh did not disappoint.
Bout 2 featured the Debutante Brawlers going up against the Trauma Queens again. There was a good amount of buzz about the second bout... even the local paper had a nice writeup and photo spread to get the derby juices flowing. There was another good sized crowd that made their way to the event... parking was at a premium. Again, if you got there early... you could get a seat in one of the many chairs that encircled the rink. In front of the chairs, there were rows upon rows of fans sitting on the floor... right next to the furious action. Behind the chairs, many were standing along the rail to get a great vantage point of the action. There were many great views to be had... but I found myself up against the wall again, right near the action. I stayed back a little ways this time to stay out of danger... because the ladies were hitting hard and flying out of the rink into people's laps. The place was once again packed with young adults, moms, dads, kids... and the rest of us! After the first half... a good band from Wilmington played a 20 minute set to keep the crowd rocking.
I thought that these rough and tumble ladies showed alot of heart and soul in the first bout... but they left is all on the track this time. The skating was fast... the hits were hard... and the scoring was plentiful. Because of a few key injuries, there were some trades made.. and the Debutante Brawlers made out pretty well by getting Violet Femme, as she was scoring like a maniac. Eva Lye was racking up points for the Trauma Queens... but in the end it was the Debutante Brawlers with the win. These two top scorers even squared off in a wrestling match during an injury timeout, getting them both a little time in the penalty box. The excitement levels were high and the aggression was through the roof. Once more... the ladies of the Carolina Roller Derby rocked the ranch!
We will have more on the Carolina Rollergirls in the near future. If you are in the Raleigh area... you should check out the upcoming bout on June 19, 2005 at the Skate Ranch. Many other cities around the country have their own teams... so check to see if there is one near you!
