I enjoyed director Roland Emmerich's latest epic, which is best described as QUEST FOR FIRE meets ONE MILLION YEARS B.C meets Moses.
A young man from a remote mountain tribe named D'Leh (Steven Strait) pursues his girlfriend, Evolet, after she and most of his tribe are captured by a band of horse-riding slavers. He and two companions, one of them the tribe's leader, cross mountains, a jungle where large predatory birds attack them and across a vast desert. Along the way they make allies with the various other tribes along the way, who had people stolen as well. There's a prophecy about a blue-eyed child who will bring down the rulers of a pyramid building culture. They've been capturing people to force them to work on this pyramid. There's also the old magic woman of the mountain tribe, who is able to see what's happening to the young warrior on his quest. She's also tied to Evolet, who has those blue eyes. It's up to D'Leh to not only save his girl but free all the people who have been enslaved.
The special effects are great, particularly the scenes with the mammoth hunt, the giant saber-toothed tiger, the ferocious ground birds and those mammoths hauling stones up the sides of a vast pyramid. It's very cool.
It's also alluded to that the leader of this civilization is a survivor of Atlantis and when we finally see what he looks like, he's a caucasian.
I thought it interesting that the people of D'Leh's tribe are a mixed tribe, having people with Eskimo, African, Asian and Middle-Eastern features, while the other tribes they meet in the south are mostly African. The leaders of the pyramid building culture resemble people from India and there are also albino Africans. I'm assuming that these pyramids are supposed to be the ones in Egypt, much older than everyone thought they were, as it's next to the Nile and they were also constructing a sphinx.
10,000 B.C. is simple in its plot but is visually entertaining and it's fascinating seeing this prehistoric world.
