This Network made-for-television disaster movie delivers the goods. A huge 7.9 earthquake strikes downtown Seattle and another shakes up Northern California. It's finally when one hits San Francisco do the governmental authorities believe the Earthquake expert (Kim Delaney) when she tells them Los Angeles is next. The president has the army evacuate the coast of California while nuclear bombs are set under the ground to fuse the tectonic plates together to prevent the devastating earthquake. Only one of the bombs isn't situated correctly and the earthquake still hits LA, drowning that city and changing the coast line. There are subplots with the earthquake expert and her relationship with a colleague, the California governor who is frantically searching for her missing daughter and the decisions the President (Beau Bridges) has to face. The movie isn't as good as those Irwin Allen disaster movies of the 70's but it's still entertaining and the effects are impressive. I'm sure this movie was made in order to capitalize on the upcoming theatrical release of THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW (2004).
