It's not that often that I come across an independent horror movie that is genuinely scary-and 13 SECONDS gave me the creeps. The premise is a band going to an old mansion to record their new album-and the place seems to be haunted. There are malevolent spirits in the nearby woods and a strange room with paintings that foretell the immediate future. You never quite know what's going on, until the unexpected twist ending. Although some of the actors are just so-so, director Jeff Thomas is best as the lead, this intense character with a hidden secret. The production values, moody lighting and the locations also bring this up a few notches on the roster. 13 SECONDS is JACOBS LADDER as if it was on Rod Serling's NIGHT GALLERY.
